Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa L. plant and belongs to non intoxicating strains as they contain less than 0.20% THC. Hemp and marijuana come from the same cannabis species but have different genetics and cannabinoid profiles. The hemp variety is rich in non-euphoric cannabidiol or CBD, while the marijuana variety produces mostly psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, the principal compound found in hemp and one of more than 140 phytocannabinoids (phyto – of a plant) naturally produced by Cannabis sativa plants. Our bodies naturally produce cannabinoids called Endocannabinoids (endo – within our bodies). Unlike the endocannabinoids synthesized inside the human body, CBD is found in hemp plants but is chemically very similar to our own endocannabinoids. This allows CBD to interact with the endocannabinoid system of the human body. Research suggests that CBD’s effect is the inhibition of the breakdown of the endocannabinoid anandamide, which is an endocannabinoid produced by our bodies (among many endocannabinoids) and potentially influenced by the use of CBD.
Full spectrum CBD Oil contains CBD and all other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids naturally found in the Cannabis Sativa plant including trace amounts of THC. They all will enhance the effect of CBD and it is known as the ‘entourage effect’. Legally, though, this amount of THC must always be less than 0.2% in most European countries and below 1% in Switzerland. At Zéna we adhere to the European regulations and our products have less than 0.20% THC.
Broad Spectrum CBD Oil does not contain traceable amounts of THC. In the process of removing THC other components of the CBD oil may be also lost. Broad Spectrum CBD Oil is also known as THC-free CBD oil.
Hemp oil, or hemp seed oil is made from cold pressing the hemp seeds. It has little to no CBD but is rich in nutrients, fatty acids and other nutritional antioxidants. It is used in cooking and also skincare.
It is important to know the difference between hemp oil or, hemp seed oil and CBD oil. There is a lot of confusion around names of the two. Hemp oil is made by cold-pressing the hemp seeds. There is no CBD in the seeds and therefore, there is no CBD in hemp seed oil.
CBD oil is made from flowers and leaves of the hemp plants rich in CBD and low in THC. CBD Oil is usually diluted with a carrier oil like coconut oil, hemp seed oil or sunflower oil, and turned into CBD oil products.
CBD helps our body in maintaining homeostasis by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). If CBD is absorbed through the mucous membranes, it can connect with endocannabinoid receptors and balance our endocannabinoid system which is responsible for regulating many body processes like pain, mood etc. Lot of researches are being made to determine how much positive effects CBD can have regarding stress, anxiety and sleep disorders.
Homeostasis is a self-regulating process by which an organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions. This includes body temperature, fluid balance, PH etc. If homeostasis cannot be maintained within tolerance limits, our body cannot function properly – consequently, we are likely to get sick.
Cannabinoids are compounds produced by the hemp plants and they account for most of the benefits of hemp. These cannabinoids are called Phytocannabinoids, while cannabinoids produced by the human body are called endocannabinoids. Cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. There are more than 140 known cannabinoids in hemp plant but CBD is the primary cannabinoid in hemp. CBD is NOT psychoactive, meaning it does not have mind altering effect.
Endocannabinoid system is an important complex cell-signaling system in human bodies that helps control functions such as your mood, appetite, temperature, sleep and immune response by helping to keep proper balance in our bodies. Like other systems in the body, the ECS can be thrown out of balance due to trauma, stress or toxins. Clinical endocannabinoid deficiency can be associated with various conditions such as migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory and neurologic conditions.
